Bad breath is also known as Halitosis and almost one-third of the population has this problem of bad breath. People who have bad breath do not usually know themselves that people nearby them are trying to get away from them due to their bad breath. It is good if you check yourself while speaking to someone that if you are having bad breath or not in order to save yourself from embarrassment.

There are many possible causes of halitosis, but the major cause of this is oral hygiene.

If particles of food are left in your mouth, it gets a breakdown by the bacteria which is then produced into sulfur compounds.

•       Dry mouth – Saliva can naturally clean your mouth. So if you haven’t drink water after a few hours and your mouth is dry; then it leads to bad breath.

•       Not following Dental hygiene – If you don’t brush twice a day and don’t do flossing, both of them removes food particle which can lead to bad breath if you didn’t follow it.  A film of bacteria known as plaque is created if you do not brush regularly.

•       Braces or Dentures which are not cleaned regularly and properly, it can also build bacteria and cause bad odor.

•       Food – When the food particle remains in between your teeth, these food particles are a breakdown and can cause bad breath. Some foods such as onions and garlic can also cause odors. After foods are digested, they get a breakdown and its products travel in the blood to the lungs which are then affecting your breath.

•       Crash diets – Doing Fasting and following low-carb diets can produce ketones which can produce bad breath. 

•       Drugs – Certain medicines can reduce saliva production and, can lead to bad breath. Some medicines also produce odors as they breakdown in the stomach and release chemicals in the breath. People who take a large dose of vitamin supplements can also have bad breath.

•       Mouth, nose, and throat conditions – Sometimes, bacteria or infections in the nose, throat, or sinuses can cause halitosis.

•       Diseases – Some diseases such as mouth cancers, thyroid, liver failure, and other diseases can cause bad breath, due to the mixing of specific chemicals which might produce it. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) also known as acidity in the stomach can also cause bad breath due to the frequent reflux of stomach acids. Aspiration pneumonia is a condition in which swelling or infection in the lungs or in the airways occurs due to inhaling vomit, food, or liquid.
