Q. Will I need to have teeth taken out?

It is not necessary all the time but if you have some teeth which are coming in your way which is not allowing making an accurate alignment, then you might need to have removed some permanent teeth to make space. Your dentist will tell you whether or not you might need it. 

Q. At what age I can have this treatment?

The best time of putting braces is usually during childhood, but adults can also have orthodontic treatment too. So it is not important at what age you are, the thing which matters is you need to have the right number of teeth for this treatment else it would get more complex when new teeth will start to come out. Your wisdom teeth might not come soon and it comes at any age. So you should have nearby 28 teeth excluding 4 wisdom teeth.

Q. What is a removable brace?

It is a simple treatment method and not like metal fixed braces; you can easily remove and fit these braces on your own. You cannot eat when you are using removable braces and you also need to keep it clean. It has such wires and springs attached, which can move the teeth small pressure. The course of treatment is more than fixed braces.

Q. What is a fixed brace?

When your teeth need to be guided more accurately and it can’t be treated using a removable brace. Therefore, in this case, a fixed brace is applied to your teeth. This has brackets and bands which are stuck for over the required course period. You can’t remove it by yourself as you can do in removable braces.

Q. What is a functional brace?

Functional brace is used for change position as the way the jaws grow.

Q. What are the brackets made of?

Fixed braces contain brackets which can be made by metal, Plastic or ceramic.

Q. What are invisible braces?

Invisible braces are hard, clear transparent plastic also known as aligners which are used to straighten teeth. They are made from clear plastic which is why it is called invisible. This means that no one will know that you are straightening your teeth.

For the best results, the aligners should be worn for 22 to 23 hours a day. It can be easily removed for eating, drinking, flossing and brushing.

Q. How long will it take for full treatment?

The length of treatment depends on how severe the problem is, and it might take from a few months to 2 years.

Q. What happens when the teeth are in the right position?

After removing brace you undergo for ‘retention’ period for a few months to hold the teeth in place. This needs to be followed strictly as if you did not then your teeth will come back to the position as it was before treatment.   

Q. Will it hurt?

At first, it does, but when you get used to it, then it will not. 

Q. How many visits will it take?

You might need to adjust in every 4 to 6 weeks. Your dentist will tell you when you need adjusting.
